My name is Xiao. I am a printmaker and secondary art teacher currently based in Providence, RI. Born and raised in China, I moved to the United States to attend Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where I received a BFA in Textiles, and an MA in community-based art education.
My current practice includes printmaking, independent publishing and teaching.
I make prints and books that merge textiles with printmaking, working at the intersection of slowness and urgency. In my practice, the care given to handcrafted textiles and the distributive potential of printed multiples are both celebrated.
I self-publish bilingually in Chinese and English, refiguring censored letters and characters into new messages. I am interested in the utilitarian uses of my works—I want my prints to serve as gifts that travel between friends and tutorials that inspire making.
I teach bookmaking to young children and youth. Currently, I am a Secondary Art Teacher at Highlander Charter School in Warren, RI.
