My name is Xiao (b. 2001). I am a printmaker and teacher currently based in Providence, RI. Born and raised in China, I moved to the United States to attend Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where I received a BFA in Textiles. I am now pursuing an MA in community-based art education.
My current practice includes printmaking, independent publishing and teaching.
I make prints and books that merge textiles with printmaking, often printing my singular textile pieces into reproducible multiples. I work at the intersection of slowness and urgency, where the care given to handcrafted textiles and the distributive potential of printed multiples are both celebrated.
I self-publish bilingually in Chinese and English, refiguring censored letters and characters into new messages. I am interested in the utilitarian uses of my works—I want my prints to serve as gifts that travel between friends and tutorials that inspire making.
I teach bookmaking to young children and youth. Currently, I am a student teacher at Mini Makerz Art Studio and an artist mentor at New Urban Arts in Providence, RI.
